Newsletter Articles In January 2009, all eyes were on the Hudson River when a plane flying out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport crash-landed in the river after striking a flock of geese. Thanks to fast acting by the pilots, all 155 passengers survived, with few major injuries. Trouble started afterwards, though, because of a communication breakdown between airlines and hospitals.  In what came as no surprise, the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE)’s 2018 “Hospital Security Survey” found that more than half of U.S. hospitals saw increased violence against staff over the past year. The good news is that hospitals are starting to fight back against that frightening trend, and hospital engineers will begin to see their positions become a big part of that battle. Many experts say that the key to safety in any healthcare workplace is to develop a culture of safety. What does this mean? Well, any safety officer can preach about training, PPE, and the like, but unless employees take ownership of the safety situation at work, the officer’s exhortations will just be rules they have to follow.
