Dear Litquake family,

Like a lot of people this weekend, we took the advice of every scientist and major newspaper in the world and steered clear of big crowds.

Instead, we did what we often do when things are going sideways, we cracked a book. It took a page or two to be lulled by its rhythm and cradled by its voice, but once inside, there was a sense of quiet and connection.

At Litquake, we know well the extraordinary things the written word is capable of: how reliable books can be when we need to step outside of our lives, how essential writing is to collecting ourselves around our experiences.

These are anxious, difficult times. But there’s also an opportunity here—to slow down and reconnect with what brings us together in this community: literature, our common humanity, delving into other’s voices and worlds, and expressing our own.

Rest assured, we are working hard (from home!) as an organization to launch a renewed vision of how to serve our community online during this crisis. In the meantime, all our public events and educational programs are postponed until early May in order to ensure the safety of those we serve. Please see our website, Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, and newsletter for updates as they come. Hankering for live literary content? See our 116 episode deep podcast.

Even in the best of times, running an arts nonprofit in San Francisco is formidable and precarious. If you’re able, please consider supporting this work with a donation. As always, and especially now, your generosity is what makes our programs possible.

Thank you for your support. Take care of yourselves and stay safe. And be ready to jump back in when our programs come back online. We will be so glad to see you.

Don’t forget to read, write, and take the time to share. We promise you’ll feel a little better.

About Litquake
Litquake, San Francisco's annual literary festival, was founded by Bay Area writers in order to put on a week-long literary spectacle for book lovers, complete with cutting-edge panels, unique cross-media events, and hundreds of readings. Since its founding in 1999, the festival has presented close to 8,650 author appearances for an audience of over 183,000 in its lively and inclusive celebration of San Francisco's thriving contemporary literary scene. Litquake seeks to foster interest in literature, perpetuate a sense of literary community, and provide a vibrant forum for Bay Area writing as a complement to the city's music, film, and cultural festivals. 2020 Dates: Oct. 8-17. www.litquake.org
