The global electronics industry is currently experiencing a severe shortage of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), with little sign of improvement in the short-term. Driven by an increase in demand from consumer and automotive industries, shortages are cascading down through every market. Engineers are now faced with redesigning their products and swapping out MLCCs for alternative capacitor technologies.

The polymer capacitor (as well as the conventional aluminium electrolytic capacitor) posesses large capacitance and excellent bias characteristics, which multilayer ceramic capacitors can never compete with. In addition to these advantages, polymer capacitors have extremely low ESR attributes. Panasonic’s SP-CAPs and POS-CAPs in particular, with their small size factor and cubical form, are the go-to products when it comes to the replacement of MLCCs.
