Siberian Express Arctic air set to hit Michigan. See how cold it could get |
Siberian Express: The Artic air moving into Michigan early next week will originate in Siberia. The Arctic cold front moves through Michigan Saturday afternoon. Sunday is a day with falling temperatures. We settle into the Siberian and Arctic air Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Tuesday morning should drop to anywhere between five degrees below zero and 15 degrees below zero. These temperature readings will probably fall just shy of record low temperatures widespread across Michigan. Snowfall totals so far: The snowfall is really adding up for part of Michigan, while other sections stay below normal on snowfall. Snowfall ranges from only six to 12 inches over far southeast Lower Michigan including Detroit and Monroe to over 10 feet of snow in areas near Gaylord and Munising in the Upper Peninsula. Here's a look at snowfall totals so far this winter across Michigan. Up North: The Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education is hosting a Cabin Fever-themed weekend on Feb. 7-9 in Roscommon, encouraging outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels to learn more about Michigan’s nature and how to safely explore the outdoors. |

Whitmer calls for compromise on road funding in 2025, but doesn’t introduce new plan |
Will the roads get fixed? Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is kicking off 2025 similarly to how she began her first term as governor—by calling for a long-term road funding solution. Whitmer laid out her economic vision and top priorities for the year, including advancing the auto market and adopting a sustainable solution to fix Michigan’s roads, while speaking Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Detroit Auto Show. Getting up to speed: In 2025, Michigan officials intend to forge ahead in a years long attempt to modernize nearly decade-old state building codes for new homes, even while continuing to face pushback from builders who want the state to take a different path. In housing news: State Rep. Carrie Rheingans is taking another shot at convincing her colleagues rent control should be an option for Michigan communities. The Ann Arbor Democrat on Tuesday, Jan. 14, introduced House Bill 4009 to repeal the state’s 1988 ban on local rent regulations. |

5 Michigan health centers get $2.5M to expand hours |
In health: A handful of community health centers in Michigan will soon expand their hours to serve patients before and after traditional work hours and on weekends. Federally-funded health centers in Hamtramck, Grand Rapids, Pontiac, Traverse City and Calumet Township have each been allocated $500,000 from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund the additional hours of service, the Biden-Harris Administration announced Wednesday, Jan. 15. Combating the crisis: Saginaw Valley State University and Delta College are now outfitted with lifesaving Narcan in hopes of holding back the opioid crisis. Narcan, generically naloxone, is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. The institutions now have Narcan due to a collaboration between them and Face Addiction Now, formerly Families Against Narcotics. Looking at the data: Here's a look at the Michigan counties with the best and worst infant survival rates, according to the latest provisional data from the Department of Health and Human Services. |

Grand Rapids leaders see new land bank as vital tool to solving housing crisis |
Grand Rapids city leaders now have a new tool in their pocket to transform abandoned and deteriorated properties across the city into affordable housing and other community spaces. This past fall, the Grand Rapids City Commission voted to establish a city land bank authority, giving the city power to acquire, hold and maintain vacant and underutilized properties until new owners can bring them back to productive use. The developer of the dilapidated former Shaw Walker furniture factory is seeking more tax incentives from the city of Muskegon to help with the cost of the $220 million redevelopment to transform the downtown site into “The Shaw.” Developer Jon Rook is now hoping to get the city, and eventually the state’s, approval to participate in the Transformational Brownfield Program. The Flint Children’s Museum will continue to offer free or discounted admission for EBT and WIC cardholders thanks in part to General Motors. The museum received a $20,000 donation as a part of General Motors’ 2024 Community Impact Grants program, with eight Genesee County non-profits awarded a total of $270,000. |

Snowmobile 6,000 miles of trails for free this weekend |
Getting outdoors: Michigan’s more than 6,000 miles of state-designated snowmobile trails will be free to ride this weekend. The annual Free Snowmobile Weekend is scheduled for Friday to Sunday, Jan. 17-19. During the event, snowmobile registration and trail permits are not required; all other regulations apply. The DNR advises riders to check weather and trail conditions before heading out. Mark the calendar: Tahquamenon Falls State Park is continuing its annual tradition of guided and lantern-lit snowshoe hikes every Saturday in February. Snowshoers can hike around the Upper Falls loop day and night at two free events. Guided hikes will take place 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays. Fun for all: Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park’s mission is to make outdoor recreation for everyone. The park has invested in adaptive sports equipment to make that a reality for all skill and ability levels. Tuesday, Jan. 21 is the park’s Accessibility Open House, a free event allowing visitors to try adaptive sports equipment. |
