Rathmines blaze: A two-storey house in Rathmines has been gutted by fire on Somersham Avenue on Monday. An exclusion zone was established due to the threat of a gas explosion, as an acetylene cylinder was impacted by the blaze.
HSC underway: Good luck to all the Hunter students who've sat their first HSC exam today (Wednesday)! Around 6,000 students from across the Hunter are among 76,000 sitting the Higher School Certificate across New South Wales.
Williamtown sessions: A community meeting in Williamtown has seen residents express their ongoing concerns about PFAS contamination to the federal government. Community engagement sessions were held in Williamtown this week, with Assistant Minister for Defence Matt Thistlethwaite and Paterson MP Meryl Swanson taking comments from impacted locals.
Graincorp fire: The cause of a second fire in five weeks at the grain silos at the Port of Newcastle is yet to be determined. Newcastle Police's chief inspector Shane Buggy said an exclusion zone was established to protect nearby residents. In a statement, Graincorp said no one was injured in the blaze that started in a dust extractor, and employees were evacuated as soon as smoke was seen.
Martins Creek quarry ticked: The Department of Planning has approved an expansion of Daracon's Martins Creek gravel quarry. It'll now go to the Independent Planning Commission for a final decision.
Jets firing up: The Newcastle Jets men's team are hoping a home game will help them open their season with a victory. Last weekend's season-opening game against the Central Coast Mariners was postponed due to flooding on the pitch and will be rescheduled. They'll take on Perth Glory this weekend at Hunter Stadium.
