Local company news:
Ghost Bites is brought to you by Fedgroup.
Sirius Real Estate is focused on the German and UK property markets. This means hard currency earnings. It also means they have working electricity, although so do we these days - until elections, probably. This hard currency context makes it rather impressive that Sirius has grown its rent at 7.2% on a like-for-like basis. This kind of organic growth is what investors like to see when there's also plenty of dealmaking going on to give the portfolio a further boost.
Over at AH-Vest, we find a victim of the bid-offer spread problem that plagues smaller companies. It's now trading on an annualised P/E of 0.5x! Will someone bravely put in a proper bid that is closer to net asset value, or will the market cap stay at just R2 million?

Brian McMillan of Structured Products at Investec talked to me about the Investec Nikkei 225 Autocall.
It offers exposure to the Nikkei 225 index over a period of up to five years with an enhanced return of up to 17% per annum in ZAR or 11.5% per annum in USD. Importantly, there is 100% capital protection provided the index does not drop by more than 30%.

International company news:
Goldman Sachs crushed stimates for the first quarter, with trading and investment banking revenue through the roof. Revenue came in at $14.21 billion vs. expectations below $13 billion. Earnings per share of $11.58 were way above estimates of $8.56, as reported by CNBC.
Goldman is the closest bank you'll find to a pure-play on the strength and levels of activity in capital markets. This is the most illustrious name in investment banking, although there have also been major strides made in more annuity-based models like asset and wealth management.
I hold both Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan in my offshore portfolio, as I believe that having exposure to the home of capitalism can't hurt over the long term.
Our latest show in Magic Markets Premium is a detailed recap on Disney, which drove me to sell my shares after the recent rally. Why is that? Subscribers find out by accessing our entire research library for just R99/month. It pays to know what's going on out there - literally. |

Macroeconomic Update Volatility is on the rise based on recent geographical tensions, with increases in the VIX as just one indication. Safe haven assets like the dollar and gold are the winners in this situation. US treasury yields are trading higher across the curve, like the 2-year at 4.93%. Despite better-than-expected Chinese Q1 GDP data, risk-sensitive currencies like the rand remain on the back foot.
That GDP release certainly didn't hurt Brent Crude though, which remains above $90.
Key indicators: USD/ZAR R19.02; US 10-year 4.61%; Gold $2,387; Platinum ZAR R18,430; Brent Crude $90.54
This macroeconomic update is based on TreasuryONE's morning update. |
