The Telegraph take

By Sophie Christie personal finance reporter

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a lovely festive break.

We're using the start of 2019 as an opportunity to take a look back on the year we've left behind, when the markets finally flagged, energy prices soared and more of us cashed in pensions.

We've looked at the winners and losers of the past year – it turns out it was better to be a saver than an investor – and have rounded up some of the best Fame and Fortune interviews, including actor Timothy West, tennis coach Judy Murray and cricket legend Henry Blofeld.

Looking to the year ahead, Telegraph Money reporter Harry Brennan has explained why 2019 is the year to invest in British shares, and Jonathan Jones has laid out the investment traps to avoid to boost your returns.

Lindsay Viljoen said about rail passengers hit with 3.2pc fare rise: "Ripoff Britain at work. Not only do we have the highest fares in Europe (with really poor service), we are a full 50pc higher than the next highest on that list."

B Carter said about how ditching a "final salary" pension can cost nine times what you save: "Sorry, but the taxpayer should not be paying for final salary pension schemes.
