ZDNet | Slack is rolling out a new tool called Actions that's designed to close the loop between Slack, third-party platforms and resulting action items. For instance, with Actions, users can more easily turn Slack messages into tasks, comments or follow-ups, attach messages to tickets, and save information for later review. Apps with Actions can appear on every Slack message in a workspace without calling up a slash command or messaging a bot to invoke the app. As a result, integrations are front and center in the Slack UI and easier to discover.

TNW | Gmail got a much-needed visual refresh and some clever new features recently. But did you know that the revamped interface also supports user mentions, à la Twitter? When you’re composing a new message or a reply, you can insert anyone’s email address in the body by entering the @ symbol, followed by their name. It'll bring up a list of people in your contact list with that name, and choosing any of them will add a mailto link labeled with their name. When your recipient clicks that link, it’ll bring up a new compose window so they can write to that contact.

ZDNet | Google Assistant is getting lots of attention for its ability to converse like a human, but it's not the only game in town. That was one of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's key messages at a May 22 talk in London focused on AI. Nadella demonstrated Microsoft's Xiaoice chat bot during his appearance, showing how the bot can converse using voice, in addition to text. Xiaoice doesn't work the same way that the Google Duplex feature does; Xiaoice doesn't act on a user's behalf, but instead has a back-and-forth conversation with users.
