☀️ Friday morning will be mild across most of central and southern Minnesota. Then, our inbound arctic front will blast through Minnesota Friday afternoon with gusty northwest winds.

🥶 Highs Saturday under an arctic sun will struggle to reach above the single digits in the Twin Cities and hover below zero in the north. The core of the coldest air arrives Saturday night through Tuesday morning.

Walz unveils slimmer Minnesota budget, pitches sales tax cut

The more restrained fiscal approach comes after Democrats who’d controlled the governor’s office, House and Senate passed a roughly $70.7 billion two-year plan in 2023 that included one-time spending that won’t automatically carry forward. It was the state’s highest-ever budget total.
 
‘A death penalty’: Ph.D. student says U of M expelled him over unfair AI allegation 

Haishan Yang, a doctoral student in health economics, filed a lawsuit in federal court last week accusing the University of Minnesota of violating his due process. He is the first Minnesota student to go public about being expelled over AI.
🦠 ‘Winter bug’ norovirus surges in Minnesota with unusually high number of cases. Norovirus, one of winter’s grossest viruses, is spreading at high rates in Minnesota and many other areas of the U.S. This year’s norovirus case uptick has been more ruthless than usual.

🏕️ St. Paul clears encampment near Mississippi River. Around 10 people were still living at the camp Thursday morning, 10 days after the city posted a notice to vacate. By sunrise, they were lighting campfires and loading belongings into trailers, trucks and backpacks.

🏛️ After juror bribe attempt, judge tightens security at second Feeding Our Future trial.
The judge said that the four defendants may view paper copies of juror questionnaires and take notes on them, but must hand over any notes to their attorneys before leaving the courthouse.

🛶 Will Trump move to pave the way for mining near the Boundary Waters next week? While on the campaign trail, Trump said he would reverse a 20-year mining ban imposed by President Biden on about 350 square miles of the Superior National Forest, just south of the Boundary Waters, in “about 10 minutes.”

🤒 Flu is flying: Twin Cities sees highest weekly hospitalizations in past four years. Statewide, 877 people were hospitalized due to influenza in the week ending Jan. 4. This far exceeds last year’s statewide peak of nearly 300 weekly hospitalizations.

🏥 Ellison joins 13 states to defend health care coverage for DACA recipients.
DACA allows immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to live and work without fear of deportation.Ellison says defending health care for DACA recipients protects public health and safety.
🎧 ‘Spreading joy through two ropes’: Rondo Double Dutch shares skills with new generation. Rondo Double Dutch is the brainchild of Mercedes Yarbrough, an educator who wanted to bring Double Dutch to a new generation in her community. She joined up with Jelahn Prentiss, who goes by Coach Twist, to expand her vision for the program.

🎧  ‘TikTok‘s days are numbered:’ expert breaks down Supreme Court case as users await decision. The video app gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a means of entertainment, information and even income.
