Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Tug Boat "Mashhour" Crew

The Egyptian team of the Mashhour dredging ship cheered for the role they played as the Ever Given was finally freed from the Suez Canal.

For nearly a week, the giant container ship was the center of an international trade logjam after it got stuck in the canal and blocked off passage between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Tugboats unsuccessfully tried to dislodge the Ever Given, but when that didn’t work, diggers worked at removing tons of sand from the banks of the canal until the ship was finally able to get back afloat.

Business Insider reports that the Mashhour was critical to the Ever Given’s successful removal. As a ship designed to dig up mud and sand underneath the water to keep the canal navigable, the Mashhour reportedly shifted 27,000 cubic meters of sand around the Ever Given before tugboats were finally able to pull it into the clear.

The decongestion of the Suez Canal is a worldwide relief for economic navigation, so the Mashhour’s crew filmed themselves celebrating their successful endeavor.

But it is the spectacularly gleeful chanting that really gets the win.

MEDIA LOSER:
Jimmy Fallon

The View’s Sunny Hostin went after Jimmy Fallon following a Tonight Show segment with TikTok star Addison Rae, during which she performed several viral dances without giving any credit to the creators.

“This is a miss,” Hostin wrote in a tweet tagging Fallon. “Let’s give credit to the black creators.”

Hostin also retweeted the segment, which is titled “Addison Rae Teaches Jimmy Eight TikTok Dances,” and features the TikTok star performing several dances without crediting the choreographers, who are largely Black TikTok users and creators.

This is not the first time Fallon has run into trouble for failing to credit Black creators, as he pulled the same move during a segment with the most followed TikTok personality Charli D’Amelio.

Hostin was not the only one to condemn Fallon, as many others on social media noted that the two failed to give credit where credit it is due. Journalist and commentator Touré, Buzzfeed’s Tanya Chen and many, many more added their criticism of Fallon.

Not to mention the dance skills.

Racist Attack in New York

The New York Police Department is investigating an incident where an elderly Asian American woman was attacked in Midtown Manhattan while bystanders appeared to look on and do nothing.

Police told multiple news outlets that the attack happened on Monday when the victim was walking in front of an apartment building. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera, and it shows that the victim was kicked to the ground by a man who kept assaulting her before walking away.

The victim was reportedly hospitalized at the NYU Langone Medical Center with serious injuries. Authorities are searching for a suspect who allegedly hurled anti-Asian slurs at her during the attack.

The video also shows there were men inside the building who watched the attack happen, but chose not to interfere and closed the door on the victim instead of coming to her aid. The Brodsky Organization, the management company for building, posted a statement saying it “condemns all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia and violence against the Asian American community. The staff who witnessed the attack have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union.”

The attack comes amid a recent spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans. The issue gained national attention earlier this month after six Asian American women and two others were murdered by a gunman who attacked massage parlors in Atlanta.

The attack was condemned by multiple police and city officials, and the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating.

Pillow Talk

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell insisted that “Donald Trump will be back in office in August,” vowing to file a lawsuit that will confirm evidence of voter fraud during the 2020 election.

Lindell made the remark while appearing on Steve Bannon’s WarRoom Pandemic podcast, and it turned into a shouting rant as Lindell ran over Bannon entirely.
