Insurance woes: The void left by the insurance companies that failed after Hurricane Ida has largely been filled in two ways: Some of the market has been gobbled up by new firms that resemble the ones that failed. And the rest has mostly gone to Louisiana Citizens, the state-backed insurer of last resort. Sam Karlin has more on why that raises concerns about the health of Louisiana’s insurance marketplace.
Cracking down: Recreational marijuana is technically illegal in Louisiana, but people who want to feel a high have a wide array of legal options: hundreds of sellers of consumable THC-infused seltzers, gummies and extracts sprang up all over the state in the past several years. Just as swiftly as consumable hemp has grown into a $33 million industry in Louisiana, so too could it disappear. James Finn has the details on two bills that aim to crack down on THC-infused products.
Concealed carry: Did Gov. Jeff Landry and state lawmakers go too far this year in passing a law that allows people to carry concealed firearms without a permit? In a statewide poll conducted for The Times-Picayune | The Advocate, a large majority of Louisiana voters said they don't support the new law. John Simerman has more from the poll.
