Small town supplies Tesla's spark. And another sinkhole emerges.

By Bob Warren

Tesla's spark: What do Elon Musk and Vidalia, La., have in common? The little town on the Mississippi River is poised to become an important cog in the electric vehicle industry. And that's where the world's richest person and his Tesla car company come in, Faimon Roberts reports.

Veterans' COVID deaths spur lawsuits: The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve became one of the sad epicenters of the pandemic. Coronavirus cases swept through the nursing home, and the death toll surged. Now, the families of two veterans who died there have filed lawsuits. Andrea Gallo and WWL-TV's Mike Perlstein report that the suits could test a state law protecting health care providers.

Jazz Fest is ON: Heading to Jazz Fest today? Wear old shoes. Rain that blew through overnight pushed the start of the festival back to 11:30 a.m. But things are no doubt humming out there by now. Here's some of our best bets.

Speaking of Jazz Fest, put this one in the “jobs to envy” category. Our food writer, the awesome Ian McNulty, recently embarked on the grueling task of tasting every new dish being sold at the festival. (Warning: The photos will make you really hungry.)

What lies beneath: A sinkhole that opened up on Canal Street in April 2016 captured our imagination for months, spawning a host of nicknames and, yes, even a Twitter account (500+ followers). Now history is repeating itself. Another sinkhole has emerged on the Metairie Road/City Park Avenue exit off Interstate 10. We're all over it, of course.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us. And of course, be sure to check out NOLA.com for more news throughout the day.

Dozens of veterans died in Reserve home’s COVID outbreak. Here’s why two families are suing.

Two years after a crush of coronavirus cases at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in St. John the Baptist Parish killed nearly a fifth of the home’s residents, families of two veterans have filed lawsuits against the home, testing a state law that largely lets health-care providers off the hook for pandemic-related deaths.
