Pushing the envelope The first port of call for reducing a structure’s reliance on heating or cooling is always a high-performing building envelope. Appropriate insulation, glazing and windows, alongside airtight construction and minimisation of thermal bridges make a world of difference to efficiency. However, balance is everything and an energy-efficient house requires a very specific air change rate and effective ventilation. For example, an overly airtight home means poor air quality and moisture control. And it’s not just manmade energy gains we need to consider. For a truly accurate picture natural energy gains from people, appliances and even the sun need to be factored in. |
