Hi Reader,

Machine learning is a fascinating area of AI. Typically, how it works is a computer is fed massive amounts of data, which enables it to compare the information, find patterns, and draw conclusions.

But that may soon be a thing of the past. A recent article in Technology Review announced that “a radical new technique lets AI learn with practically no data.”

It’s called “less-than-one-shot learning” and can teach AI to identify more objects than the number of examples it is trained on. It’s more like the way humans are learning. The human mind is capable of drawing conclusions from often very little data by applying imagination.

Researchers now say that if you engineer the data input just right, even two pieces of information—like weight and color—could enable AI to reliably recognize apples and oranges.

This is a huge deal because it will make it possible to cut down on the need for enormous databases (and the associated costs) to make AI work.
