Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jonathan Swan

Axios' Jonathan Swan has a well-earned reputation for conducting thoroughly-researched, hard-hitting interviews of political figures, including former President Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), and many, many more.

Swan can now add Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to the list of bold-faced names who have had a newsworthy interview with him.

The chat with Khan, which aired as a part of the Axios on HBO series, covered weighty topics like the genocide of Muslim Uighurs in China and whether Khan would allow the CIA to conduct counterterrorism activities within his country's borders.

Khan's attempts to duck the question regarding the Uighurs didn't fly with Swan, who relentlessly confronted him on why he has been silent on the issue.

Swan's interview of Khan was an important glimpse of the leader of a country that is likely to play a pivotal role in that region of the world for years to come.

MEDIA LOSER:
Tucker Carlson

Fox News' Tucker Carlson has been heavily criticized recently for promoting conspiracy theories about the pandemic and that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a false flag operation by the FBI on his top-rated show. And it's his off-the-record comments that raised eyebrows -- and invoked a deluge of tweeted mockery -- after a New York Times article by media reporter Ben Smith

Carlson's penchant for gossiping with the same liberal media outlets he so frequently denounces from his televised platform is "one of Washington's open secrets," wrote Smith, noting that numerous journalists described Carlson as "a great source" on topics ranging from Trump to Fox News' "tumultuous internal politics."

Reaction to the story from blue-check Twitter was predictably harsh, but many made fair points about hypocrisy. Carlson has long presented himself to his viewers as battling on their side against the "elites," so the fact he's apparently peddling juicy gossip as an "insurance policy" against overly critical coverage is very relevant. And not a good look.

Juneteenth, finally official

Americans celebrated Juneteenth on Saturday for the first time since President Joe Biden signed a bill Thursday designating it as a new national holiday.

June 19th, 1865 marks the date — about two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation — that slaves in Galveston, Texas finally got the news that they were free. Juneteenth has been celebrated in many states for years, but this year marks the first time it was recognized as an official federal holiday.

Opal Lee, the 94-year-old affectionately referred to as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth" for her work promoting the remembrance of the day, had a delightful interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo about seeing her dream finally come true.

Another must-see was this impassioned monologue by Fox Business' Charles Payne, telling viewers that Juneteenth is about “acknowledging the past” while moving forward as a nation.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) got a less-than-warm welcome at Milwaukee’s Juneteenth festivities Saturday, drawing boos and jeers from attendees, angry at his past opposition to the bill.

"If you asked me in the abstract whether America needed another federal holiday, I’d have said, 'No,' wrote Jonah Goldberg at The Dispatch. "But, if you asked me if Juneteenth should be a federal holiday, I’d have said, 'Sure.' Juneteenth is a good thing for all Americans, not just black Americans, to celebrate."

"That seemed to bother you. Why?"

CNN’s John Berman grilled New York City mayoral candidate Eric Adams about his claim that the alliance between two of his rivals — Kathryn Garcia and Andrew Yang — is an effort to stop a person of color from winning the race.

Yang responded on Sunday at a press conference: “I would tell Eric Adams that I’ve been Asian my entire life.”

Berman addressed several other key topics during the New Day segment, important viewing as this election approaches that will determine who takes the reins of one of America -- and the world's -- most influential cities. The new addition of ranked choice voting into the election may also serve as an interesting experiment that the rest of the country would be well advised to watch.
