Classical music, with a sprinkling of Christmas magic

One of the world’s great concert halls, Wigmore Hall, is putting on a stellar series of classical concerts this Christmas. This is your chance to catch world-class musicians and choral performances, mere minutes from Oxford Circus station.

Perhaps the season’s greatest spectacle is a New Year’s Eve concert inspired by two of Bach’s most uplifting Cantatas, though the entire programme is full of festive delights. From piano recitals to orchestral showcases, all have thoughtful links to the Christmas period. See below for our pick of festive concerts.

Wigmore Hall’s intimate auditorium is a sheer joy – renowned for its crystal clear acoustics. Plus, under 35s can snap up £5 tickets to most concerts. Regular tickets start from £16. What better reason to pop Wigmore Hall on your wish list this season!

20 and 31 December

Join Scottish baroque ensemble, Dunedin Consort, on 31 December and ring in the New Year to two of Bach’s joyous compositions: No. 63 (written for Christmas) and No. 110 (first performed on Christmas Day, 1725). Both celebratory, through-and-through. Dunedin Consort also host a special Christmas concert on 20 December.

23 December

Revel in the festive spirit with a performance by Il Pomo d’Oro Choir. A choral offshoot of Italy’s leading period instrument orchestra, the choir will fill Wigmore Hall with a selection of rousing songs and hymns suitable for Christmas Vespers (that’s a pre-Christmas service of music and praise).

28 December

Pianist Piers Lane hits the keys to showcase the works of two composers: Edvard Grieg and Franz Liszt. The pieces flit between Grieg’s historically-styled Holberg Suite and the charming simplicity of Liszt’s Christmas Tree. Reportedly, the suite was first performed for Liszt's granddaughter in Rome on Christmas Day, 1881.

29 December

Tenor Robin Tritschler and pianist Joseph Middleton join forces for a stirring display of Christmas-themed classics and poetic German Lieder. The duo’s chosen selection spans greats like Loewe, Beethoven, Schubert and Debussy, as well as a lesser-known Spanish-language collection from Cuban pianist, Joaquín Nin.
