A League of Your Own: Investing in Pro Sports

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat — owning a sports team might not be the most traditional investment, but for those willing to play the game, the rewards are vast. Two legendary owners with very different backgrounds meet for this conversation about the unique business challenges and cultural responsibilities that come with professional sports. Alex Rodriguez wrapped up an incredible career in major league baseball after playing for 22 years, and is now part owner of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Lynx. David Rubenstein is a businessman, lawyer and co-founder of the Carlyle Group private equity firm. In 2024, he became the principal owner of the Baltimore Orioles, his hometown MLB team. Businessman Gregg Lemkau, co-CEO of the merchant bank BDT and MSD Partners, moderates their conversation about what it’s like to have a major stake in the game.

The Question of Happiness

From the ancients to our founding fathers to our modern-day achievement-focused culture, the question of what makes us happy continues to perplex. Why are we eternally fascinated by the pursuit of happiness, and will we ever agree about what makes us truly happy? In this all-star panel, New York Times columnist David Brooks leads a conversation between Harvard cultural historian Sarah Lewis, National Constitution Center CEO Jeffrey Rosen, Yale dean and philosophy professor Tamar Gendler, and New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik. Together, they explore questions of the good life, the relationship between our civic and personal lives, and the societal factors that shape joy.
