I'm tired of paying for inkQ: We are retired and need to replace our printer. What is the easiest and least expensive printer that we can purchase? We're tired of purchasing costly cartridges. A: Here's something to keep in mind. The cheapest printer out there won't cost you much up front, but you will be stuck with the price of expensive ink cartridges forever. That's a pain — and the reason why I recommend the Epson EcoTank. It has easy-to-fill tanks instead of expensive cartridges that run out. You can print thousands of pages on one refill. It's so much less expensive in the longrun. Add the Epson EcoTank to your online shopping list at Amazon, Dell, MicroCenter or epsonecotank.com/kim. |
Done with Google PhotosQ: My camera roll is automatically backing up to Google Drive and all my photos are in Google Drive. I have used Google Takeout to back them up locally. However, it takes forever for the backup to complete and once done, I not only have images, but also the metadata file for that image. Do you know of a good solution to backup all my photos from Google? A: That is a pain, and it's not a process you want to do over and over. Instead of moving around, your best bet is going with a cloud-based backup system you can stick with for years to come. My pick is IDrive. It's fast and easy to set up, you can sync all your devices and manage them from one account. For just a few bucks, you get 5 terabytes of cloud space. That should be all you need and more. Save 90% (yes, really!) at IDrive.com and use promo code Kim at checkout. |
Privacy-focused emailQ: I am interested in ending my relationship with Google, which means no more Gmail, Google search, etc. I want privacy. I am not completely clear on how to transition from Gmail to another secure email program. Is it seamless? Can I transfer my current email addresses? Can I move saved emails (in mailbox folders) to the new platform or do I need to keep them out of the new platform? A: I've heard from a lot of people in the same boat. Gmail is convenient, but now your privacy is your main concern. I recommend you check out my sponsor, StartMail. They never read your emails, your data is yours and yours alone, and anything you delete really is gone for good. After you create a new account, you'll need to inform your contacts and transfer your old emails to your new inbox. It's not hard, but it does take a little time. We outline the steps for you here. If you're ready to say goodbye to Big Tech, go to StartMail.com/Kim to try it out yourself free for 7 days and get 50% off your first year. |
