Social distancing works, but we must stick with it
Good morning and happy Saturday. Here's what you need to know today.

Enjoy the morning while you can. Saturday starts sunny in the Twin Cities before clouds, and potentially rain and thunderstorms, roll in. Highs in the mid-60s. Statewide, partly cloudy with highs from the upper 50s to mid-60s and a chance of rain and storms in the afternoon and evening. More on Updraft. | Forecast

Social distancing works, but only if we continue. That's according to new modeling from University of Texas researchers. There's a 93 percent chance deaths will begin declining within two weeks under current practices, the model shows, and a 70 percent chance it would happen within the next week.

But if we stop distancing ... the model suggests even bigger coronavirus outbreaks are in store for Minnesota.

Here are the latest coronavirus statistics:
  • 3,185 confirmed cases via 53,787 tests

  • 221 deaths

  • 756 cases requiring hospitalization

  • 278 remain hospitalized; 111 in intensive care

  • 1,594 patients recovered

Despite the economy, some employers are ramping up hiring. Jobs that supply people with food and other goods are in high demand right now.

School closures are making a big impact on many of our lives. What happens next? Our education reporter, Elizabeth Shockman, has a rundown of everything from meal access to summer camps.

Those four walls getting you down? Our Matt Mikus rounded up some fun activities you (and the whole family) can do this weekend. Get these suggestions, and more, sent to your inbox by signing up for our weekend newsletter “The ‘sotan.”

And remember to celebrate spring this weekend. How are you appreciating the outdoors while social distancing this season? Share with us what you see and hear from nature in your backyard and beyond.
