Covered Conductor Systems (Spacer Cable and Tree Wire) are used in contaminated environments and severe climates. In some cases, this has led to system failures. This paper categorizes contaminants and their environments, reviews spacer cable performance in such environments, and analyzes lessons learned. The objective of this analysis is to create a design blueprint for the specification of aerial covered conductor systems and system components, along with preventative maintenance requirements.
