Solstice opens as Lakewood’s newest downtown hangout Downtown Lakewood has a new hangout in Solstice, the latest Detroit Avenue bar to take over the spot that once housed Deagan’s Kitchen and Bar. Deagan’s was a staple at 14810 Detroit Ave. for 13 years, loved for its weekly specials like Taco Tuesday or weekend brunch service. Now an ownership group comprised of seven hospitality industry professionals is hoping that Solstice can take Deagan’s community vibe and turn it up a notch. “We just want it to be comfortable,” said Annabelle Andricks, the executive pastry chef at Solstice. “A fun place to come with family or friends, a welcoming place.” Cleveland.com’s Alex Darus has the story and photos. If you’re hoping your favorite restaurant in Cleveland is on the list, don’t hold your breath. 16 restaurants for Puerto Rican mofongo in Northeast Ohio Cleveland.com’s Alex Darus is creating a series of Hispanic Heritage Month dining guides to Greater Cleveland’s rich Latin-American food scene. Up first is mofongo, made from a mash of fried green plantains mixed with garlic, pork (like bacon or chicharron, which is fried pork skin), and other seasonings. It’s an ultimate comfort food as well as versatile — mofongo can be eaten on its own or with other dishes like meat or broth. Edwins is teaming with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Police Foundation on the program. Brandon Chrostowski’s restaurant and non-profit culinary-arts program hires and trains formerly incarcerated adults. OPENINGS & CLOSINGS Agave & Rye to open in former Paladar space Agave & Rye is moving into the space formerly occupied by Paladar at Eton Chagrin Blvd. Billed as a modern Tequila and Bourbon hall, the Covington, Kentucky-based restaurant is scheduled to open in spring 2024, representatives for the restaurant and Eton Chagrin Blvd. announced. It’s the second location for Agave & Rye, which opened a year ago in downtown Cleveland. That one is at West 6th Street and St. Clair Avenue in the Warehouse District. READ MORE North High Brewing closes Ohio City brewpub, ceasing Cleveland operations Columbus-based beer company North High Brewing has closed its Ohio City brewpub, thus ceasing operations in the Cleveland area. The brewery announced the closure on Monday, September 25, via social media. North High previously operated a location in Beachwood, which transformed into an event-only venue earlier this year. Both spaces were opened in collaboration with the COHatch coworking space. READ MORE Chesterland’s Perky Kettle reopens in new location nearby The Perky Kettle, a Chesterland tearoom with a liquor license, closed in May after Mother’s Day brunch. The new location, 12650 West Geauga Plaza Chesterland, opens Friday, Sept. 22, in the Giant Eagle Plaza nearby. The business will more than double its square footage, going from 3,000 square feet to 7,000 square feet and nearly tripling seating from 35 to 95. The expansion to the corner of Chillicothe and Mayfield roads will address the business’s growth since it opened in 2019.
