Minority population: Greater Cleveland has some of the most diverse cities in Ohio, accounting for large pockets of Black, Asian, and Hispanic or Latinx people, according to new estimates released from the Census Bureau. Zachary Smith reports the four cities in Ohio with the highest percentage of Black population are all Cleveland suburbs: Warrensville Heights, East Cleveland, Bedford Heights and Maple Heights. The largest Hispanic or Latinx population in Greater Cleveland is the city of Lorain, while Pepper Pike has the largest Asian population. Conviction overturned: Early this year, Kyle Stone, Stark County’s prosecuting attorney, got an email from a postconviction attorney wanting to discuss the case of Aaron Culbertson, a Black prisoner who was serving eight years in prison for an armed robbery in Canton in 2018. When shown surveillance photo from the case, Stone quickly realized Culbertson was not the suspect, and he used the new evidence to track down two men incarcerated for unrelated crimes who acknowledged being the ones seen in the photo, John Tucker reports. |

Crime bill: When Ohio lawmakers passed a massive, 1,000-page-plus criminal-justice reform bill last week, much attention was paid to the part of it that would toughen the state’s penalties for distracted driving. But Senate Bill 288, currently headed to Gov. Mike DeWine, would change a lot more than that. Jeremy Pelzer outlines what the bill would do. |

Winter storm: It appears Northeast Ohio is returning to some sense of normalcy after a winter storm over the weekend. Highs in the area reached the 20s Monday and there were few power outages, Megan Sims reports. Cleveland's Promise: Sophia, a student at Almira Elementary School in Cleveland, has a new favorite playground, a few new friends and a new apartment. Hannah Drown reports as part of the Cleveland Promise series that Sophia has met this relocation with eagerness and anticipation ... a marked departure from the anger and sadness she felt when she initially moved in with her Aunt Lynn following the arrest of Sophia’s parents in January. Christmas trees: If you want to keep your once-living Christmas tree out of a landfill, consider making it a snack for needle-nibbling animals. Peter Krouse reports where the Stearns Homestead farm at 6975 Ridge Road in Parma feeds discarded Christmas trees to its goats and sheep. |

Benefits of joy: Joy, by definition, is a burst of intense happiness. But that definition doesn’t seem to quite do the emotion justice. Even the word itself in its simplicity fails to convey its importance in the range of human emotions. Police shooting: A robbery suspect has died after being shot by Barberton police Monday morning, Megan Sims reports. The male suspect, who has been identified as 34-year-old Zachary Zoran of Akron, reportedly was armed with a knife and charged at officers when he was shot by police. Homicides: Cleveland police are investigating two homicides in back-to-back days. Brittany Snead, 33, died Sunday at MetroHealth after she was shot Friday in the Cudell neighborhood, John Tucker reports. Shawn Jackson, 48, was found dead Saturday morning on West Third Street on the Cuyahoga River’s east bank, near a set of train tracks. |
