It’s Freedom Day in SA 27th April. Many of us will remember standing in multi-racial, highly diverse queues for the first time as we defied, with a peaceful vote, world predictions of a looming civil war.
We talked of our ‘political miracle’, we spoke of the possibility of an ‘economic miracle’ to follow, which hasn’t really happened.
We even spoke of s ‘social miracle’ with the prospects of moving towards a truly non-racial society, that hasn’t really happened either. So what is there to celebrate? Are we still and nation of Insiders vs Outsiders as Steven Friedman points out?

On Freedom Day, the 27th of April 2021, South Africans will celebrate 27 years of democracy. Inspired by the significance this day holds, Kola Cohen, a 19-year-old from Hout Bay, will be paddling 27km to provide 27,000 meals for vulnerable Capetonians.
Paddling on a prone board, Kola will be participating in the Freedom Paddle, an initiative where paddlers paddle from Cape Town to Robben Island (and back) to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela and the struggle heroes who fought for South Africa’s freedom.

An entrepreneur has taken his Magaliesberg mushroom farm from a pipe dream to a burgeoning business that now employs 175 people, and supplies hundreds of stores with high quality local produce.
The business, called Tropical Mushrooms, was started by entrepreneur Peter Nyathi, and it delivers to the Shoprite Group’s Centurion distribution centre on a daily basis. From there, the mushrooms make their way onto shelves of more than 350 Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets throughout Gauteng.[read more]
As part of their month-long celebrations around World Book Day, the international kids educational publisher, Twinkl, has teamed up with everyone’s favourite children and young person’s author, Jaco Jacobs.
23rd April is the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. A celebration of both writers and writing, this year, the focus of the is on the unsung heroes: the publishers, the booksellers, the librarians.

Stranded Cargo
Around 12% of global trade passes through the Suez Canal. On March 23 2021 the Ever Given, a 400m long and 200,000 tonne container ship grounded, blocking the canal. The stranded ship was holding up an estimated R135bn of trade each day. That equates to R5.8bn an hour, or R98m a minute.
