Click here October 2021 Mental Health of Entrepreneurs in South Africa Takes a Toll #ThisIsUs By Bridgit Evans The impact of the recent looting and unrest in parts of our country has profoundly impacted many of the entrepreneurs we work with. It not only resulted in stunted growth of their businesses, but has also threatened their livelihoods and diminished their sense of safely, trust and hope. On top of the challenges of dealing with the impact of COVID 19, this has caused considerable trauma and strain, negatively affecting their wellbeing. Little is said about the mental health of entrepreneurs and we often don’t talk about the health of those who struggle every morning to keep their heads above water or simply to survive. The journey of an entrepreneur is filled with many ups and downs, and there are many demands placed on them in starting and growing a business. It is easy during this process to neglect the most important thing – personal care. Working towards changing the narrative of South Africa one small step at a time On the 1st of October 2021, extreme adventurer, life coach, motivational speaker and humanitarian activist Gaven Sinclair will embark on a 1000 km adventure to launch BrandMed’s Syntro-P Wellbeing programme. Food rescue organisation, SA Harvest, has celebrated its second anniversary, coinciding with World Food Day on 18 October and two major milestones – the delivery of 11 million meals to hungry people and the imminent launch of a branch in the Eastern Cape. Alan Browde, SA Harvest Founder and CEO, says that the delivery of over 11 million meals – which equates to more than 15,000 meals every day – was way beyond the organisation’s initial expectations for the first two years. Geared to Grow is a platform to fast track economic development by equipping the vulnerable and unemployed with driving licenses. Being able to drive is one of the single most important skills a person can have and is quite literally life changing. South Africa is facing an unemployment pandemic that is placing immense pressure on all aspects of living. At times like these people who find themselves in vulnerable positions are easy to overlook and face many hurdles while trying to seek employment. Our target for the #CODERED pilot project is 50 learners and 50 drivers licenses. Engen has pledged another R1 million fuel to FoodForward SA, to help power the delivery of nutritious food to vulnerable people across South Africa World Food Day aims to raise global awareness and create action by highlighting the plight of vulnerable and impoverished communities who are in desperate need of food Shy Music, producers of Calling Us Home, are proud to announce that acclaimed American Director, Peter Flynn, has joined their Creative Team as Director of their original grand-scale musical opera, to prepare the show for international touring in 2023. Peter will be travelling from his home in New York to Cape Town, to lead the Creative Team – which will be a hybrid of South African and American creatives – as rehearsals begin in Cape Town in January 2023. Hard Times and Soft Skills Global talent shortage is at a 15-year high, according to the Employment Outlook Survey carried out by ManpowerGroup in Q3 of 2021. In South Africa 46% of employers are having difficulty filling jobs. This is a massive increase from just 34% in 2019 and the Covid-19 pandemic is largely to blame. While Operations / Logistics skills are now most in demand, the pandemic has also sharpened focus on soft skills such as resilience and collaboration.
