The founder of Mthembu Tissue Converting, he started his career at Nampak as a packer. He later became its converting plant manager and now owns a company that directly employs 18 people. Like the folks behind 100% black-owned furniture manufacturer Fair Price Furnishers — which has created 183 direct jobs — Mthembu received funding from the Industrial Development Corp (IDC), for which creating black industrialists is a strategic imperative. While “black industrialist” may on the face of it seem just another catchphrase to be trotted out, it’s a concept that the continent’s largest development finance institution is taking seriously. Run by a diverse group of people who have a passion to help change South Africa, the organisation intends to enhance and develop South African democracy by bringing about change and political awareness in our citizenry – all helped along by various civic and constitution-based games. Apart from the development team, eCivix consists of academics, lawyers, actuaries, and a number of students in the fields of economics, law and politics. South African Election SimulatorIn view of the dire need for constitutional literacy amongst the youth of South Africa, eCivix commenced the development of its election simulator in early 2017. It would be possible, by making use of social media and the internet, to help high school learners discover the intricacies of constitutional democracy on their own – all whilst having fun.
