July 18th is a global celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and the legacy he left for mankind. We are urged to take 67 minutes ‘time-out’ to do something to commemorate his life and make a small difference. Some argue we have ‘lost the plot’ – that Mandela’s life deserves much more than 67 minutes of ‘doing good’ once a year. I wonder what the great man himself would have thought. “Partners for Possibility” is part of the six 2018 WISE Awards Winning projects Doha, Qatar, July 17, 2018: The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), an initiative of Qatar Foundation (QF), today announced the South African project “Partners for Possibility” (PfP) as a winner of its 2018 WISE Awards. Each year, the WISE Awards recognise and promote innovative projects from across the world that are addressing global educational challenges. Partners for Possibility, the flagship programme of Symphonia for South Africa (SSA), improves the quality of education by capacitating principals in under-resources schools and building their leadership skills through partnerships with business leaders. The Shea O’Connor Combined School Story I have been involved with Columba Leadership programme, very much on the periphery, for many years. Today it has a considerable track record of success. Essentially their business model is to capacitate schools to effectively engage their learner population in social action to tackle school and community challenges. Youth and adults work in partnership to bring about positive change. Young leaders develop the character, purpose and 21st century competence for success in life, further study and work. Last year 84% of their graduates achieved degree or diploma matric passes and 75% of the graduates assumed formal leadership positions in their schools. Steuart Pennington THIS WEEK'S FAST FACTHelping hands The CAF World Giving Index 2017 of 139 countries provides insight into the giving behaviour of people around the world, with questions on helping a stranger, donating money to charity, and volunteering time. The top three positions are held by Myanmar, Indonesia, and Kenya, with scores of 65%, 60%, and 60% respectively. Yemen is ranked 139th with the lowest score of 13%.
