Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. In addition to these weekly updates, you can sign up to receive other issue-specific newsletters here. Also, please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Connecting Students To Opportunity Having grown up poor in a single-parent household, I can remember flunking out of multiple classes and feeling hopeless. But thanks to my mother’s perseverance and the guidance of mentors who took me under their wing, I am where I am today. Now, it’s my mission to bring that same hope and opportunity to young people of all backgrounds. That’s why I recently added another initiative to my Opportunity Agenda: “Opportunity Internships,” which will connect employers to students from Title I high schools across the state. Too often, our brightest students are shut out of access to career opportunities because of their zip code or their socioeconomic status. This initiative will help these students with backgrounds like mine to realize their full potential, and it will allow companies to invest in the next generation of South Carolina leaders. You can read more about the program and my personal story in The State newspaper. Defending the Nation Together Last week, I joined the Sean Hannity Show to discuss how we can protect the future of our great nation. The fact is that the Left’s plan to fundamentally alter and nationalize our elections is un-American. It poses a true threat to our democracy, as do the massive, liberal spending bills that have little to do with the issues at hand – first COVID-19 and now infrastructure. However, I remain hopeful that if we – elected officials and citizens, together – raise our voices and remain actively involved in this political struggle, the best is yet to come for our great nation. You can listen to the full conversation here. Great Developments in South Carolina Throughout the past week, I’ve had the joy of visiting with folks back home in South Carolina and witnessing projects that are reviving and strengthening the state. The South Carolina Ports Authority recently announced the grand opening of the new Leatherman Terminal, the first container terminal to open in the U.S. since 2009. The first ship arrived on Friday, and our great state is now helping lead the charge in bolstering the nation’s supply chains and spurring economic growth and job creation. I also attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of Volvo Car Stadium in Daniel Island, which will be an exceptional venue for tennis matches, concerts, and more. I can’t wait to see the talent, jobs, and revenue these projects will bring to our state. South Carolina just keeps getting better and better! Have a great week! Sincerely, |
