Southwest 2Q net profit down 1.3%; fuel hedging pays off

Southwest Airlines posted a second-quarter net profit of $733 million, down 1.3% from net income of $743 million the 2017 June quarter, as fuel hedging insulated the carrier from the much larger year-over-year (YOY) profit drops being reported by rival major US carriers.


AccorHotels drops plan to take Air France-KLM minority stake

French hotel group AccorHotels said it was no longer interested in buying a minority stake in Air France-KLM, just under two months after it confirmed an interest in the airline group.

American reports 2Q net profit down 35.5% on higher fuel costs

Despite generating more revenue than in any quarter in its history, a significant increase in fuel costs drove American Airlines’ second-quarter net profit down 35.5% year-over-year (YOY), leading the carrier to scale back capacity growth, defer 22 Airbus A321neo deliveries and make changes to its basic economy product.


Ryanair pilots call for a fourth strike day

Tension between Ryanair and its workforce has ratcheted up another notch, following the Irish pilots’ union’s decision to strike for a fourth day on Aug. 3.

Airbus commercial aircraft revenue up 1.7% in 1H

Airbus’ commercial aircraft segment generated €18.2 billion ($21.2 billion) in revenue over the first half of 2018, up 1.7% from €17.9 billion in 1H 2017; EBIT came to €773 million for the first six months of 2018, more than doubling the segment’s €381 million EBIT during the same period last year.
