Western Cape focus pays off

Good morning Voornaam,

Quick links:

  • Spear REIT announced a major acquisition from Emira earlier in the week and followed up that news with with an update for the financial year. Concentrating on the Western Cape is working. Also in property, Schroder's cost of funding has ticked higher. In retail, Woolworths has finalised the acquisition of Absolute Pets. Transaction Capital has confirmed the unbundling date for WeBuyCars and Southern Palladium is making progress towards a pre-feasibility study. All this and more in Ghost Bites, brought to you by Fedgroup.

  • Jeremy Maggs is a highly familiar name in local broadcasting and he hosts Investec's No Ordinary Wednesday podcast. The latest episode features award-winning fund managers Barry Shamley and Peter Vogel, bringing you their view on the markets. This podcast is brought to you by Investec and you can (and should) listen to it here>>>

  • Digital assets and fintech: two important growth areas in the world. These terms can be confusing though, especially when you start talking about blockchain and even cryptocurrency. For a perspective on how corporates are thinking about this stuff (rather than the kid down the road on Reddit trading coins with outrageous names), I spoke to Wiehann Olivier and Mia Pieterse of Mazars in South Africa. In the background of all the chaos, there's a lot going on at corporate level with this technology. Listen to the show here>>>

  • Taylor Swift's incredible success isn't news to you, but why do we treat individual success differently to corporate success? After all, isn't there a point at which a person becomes a business? Dominique Olivier takes a look at the Microsoft of Musicians in this excellent article>>>

  • Artificial, or Artificial Intelligence? AI is dominating headlines everywhere, which means opportunities and risks. To discuss this phenomenon, Nico Katzke of Satrix joined me on the latest Ghost Stories podcast. Find it here>>>

  • Thanks to Mazars, there's an insightful episode of Ghost Wrap for you this morning. Get the latest on Transaction Capital, Sun International, Thungela and OUTsurance in this fast-paced podcast.

  • A brand new episode of the Magic Markets podcast gives you the latest on Lululemon and FedEx as great examples of offshore companies that should always be on your radar to learn more about.

LISTEN: Artificial, or Artificial Intelligence?
(with Nico Katzke of Satrix)

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is all over the headlines. Like with any hype trade, that's both an opportunity and a risk.

To bring some clarity to what this is and what this isn't, Nico Katzke of Satrix joined me on Ghost Stories. You'll really enjoy this podcast>>>

LISTEN: Diving into Digital Assets and Fintech
(with Wiehann Olivier and Mia Pieterse of Mazars in South Africa)

Digital assets, blockchain and crypto are shrouded in mystery, yet corporates are not blind to the opportunities in this technology.

And as for fintech, that's always a hive of activity.

When a person becomes wildly successful, we talk about luck and upbringing. When a company is worth billions, we talk about strategy.

But is a megastar like Taylor Swift really so different to a business? Dominique Olivier brings you this excellent article>>>

Local company news:

Ghost Bites is brought to you by Fedgroup.

Spear REIT is a great example of the power of focus. Instead of trying to own properties all over the place and grow for the sake of growth, the fund has dedicated its efforts to the Western Cape. Unless you've been living under a rock for the last ten years (or perhaps trapped in a pothole somewhere else), a huge amount of capital has flowed in the direction of Cape Town. That's good for property. In the latest update from the company, we can see earnings defensiveness coming through.

Also in the property sector, Schroder European Real Estate refinanced a loan in Europe. That's not terribly exciting in isolation, but it's a wonderful opportunity to learn about how the cost of funding ticks up. It's also incredible that a 20 basis points impact on total cost of funding is now treated as a non-event. My, how the approach to rates and inflation has changed in the developed world in the past year or two.

Locally, Woolworths has closed the acquisition of Absolute Pets, deal that both Ghost Cats approve of. Just for interest, I'll be sure to look out for organic vegan dog biscuits there next time I'm buying cat litter, to see if that Woolies influence is coming through yet. This was also an excellent excuse to use a kitten for the cover image of Ghost Bites today.

Finally, Transaction Capital has confirmed the unbundling date for WeBuyCars as well as the size of the stake that it owns prior to unbundling and after all the capital raising activity.

Everything you need is in Ghost Bites at this link>>>

To help you form your own view on the value of WeBuyCars, you can watch the recording of their recent appearance on the Unlock the Stock platform.

Macroeconomic Update

The softer tone in the dollar has continued this morning, with the dollar losing ground against major peers as markets focus on jobless claims later today and non-farm payrolls tomorrow.

Gold is earning its spot at the top of the podium, touching $2,304 this morning as investors jump into the asset. PGMs have also seen gains and so have base metals, driven by Chinese PMI data. Copper jumped over 9% yesterday!

In oil news, OPEC+ members agreed to maintain current production cuts, giving more support to the price.

Key indicators: USD/ZAR R18.68; US 10-year 4.37%; Gold $2,299; Platinum ZAR R17,510; Brent Crude $89.61

This macroeconomic update is based on TreasuryONE's morning update.

International company news:

Disney shareholders chose to throw their weight behind Bob Iger's efforts to turn things around at the company, with Nelson Peltz and former Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter losing out. I'll bet there was some muttering indeed!

Although it may look like the attempted shareholder activism here as failed, the reality is that Disney's share price performance this year has been largely driven by the company acknowledging that there are problems. Without activists, this doesn't always happen automatically.

I'm still deciding what to do with my Disney shares. Patience worked well here, as I finally clawed back all the on-paper losses in that position. I'm worried that the hype around the turnaround will turn out to be a disappointment, with Disney having given away a ton of ground to other studios on kids and other content.
