What makes this anniversary so important? In a year that's been characterized by a remarkable wave of protest, and in the lead-up to an already-contested election, the hard, flawed fight to win the vote for women is a reminder both of how far the country has come since its founding, and how far it still has to go. It's a reminder that progress is a balance between choosing when to put faith in established systems, and when to fight them.
