Renato Mariotti for Illinois Attorney General
I'm running for Attorney General, but I'm not like most people who run for public office in this state. I'm not a Springfield politician or a political insider. I'm an experienced lawyer and prosecutor who has worked in our industry for years.
I was born in Chicago and grew up in Naperville to a blue-collar family. Neither of my parents went to college, but they each worked two jobs to make ends meet. Thanks to their hard work , I was able to go to the University of Chicago and Yale Law School.
After law school, I spent almost a decade as a federal prosecutor investigating and prosecuting hundreds of cases in a wide variety of areas, including child exploitation, human trafficking, cybercrime, fraud, and public corruption. As a senior prosecutor, I focused on investigating crimes related to our industry.
For example, I was the first person in the nation to prosecute a trader under the anti-spoofing provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. I won that trial, but shortly thereafter, I learned I had cancer. Fortunately, I won that battle too. After I became cancer-free, I left government to become a partner at the Thompson Coburn law firm.
At Thompson Coburn, I represent trading firms, FCMs, broker-dealers, and individuals. Some of my clients have been investigated by the SEC, CFTC, FINRA, NFA CME Group, and the Department of Justice. I also handle civil litigation for trading firms, and won a jury trial for a trading firm last year. I also conduct compliance trainings for my clients.
Recently, I have been a legal commentator on MSNBC, CNN, and CBS News regarding the Mueller investigation and the impact it has had on the Trump Administration. I've also written more than 30 op-eds for the New York Times, Washington Post, Politico, Newsweek, and other publications.
I'm running for Attorney General because I believe that we need an independent voice in that office. Too often, it's been a politicians' jobÂa stepping-stone to something else for a member of the machine. We're in a difficult time in our state and our country, and we could really use an Attorney General who is a great attorney, instead of a politician with years of experience trading favors in Springfield..
I'm not accepting any special interest money, unlike my opponents, who take six-figure checks from utilities and tobacco companies. I've been raising money online from individuals.
As Attorney General, I want to help ordinary people who need an attorney to represent them. Many people need representation and don't have the means to get it. I want to protect people who are being defrauded or taken advantage of in some way. I have experience with cases like theseÂI have tried them, as a prosecutor and on the defense.
As an independent voice, I also I intend to conduct civil investigations of questionable practices by Illinois politicians as Attorney General. Corruption goes far beyond criminal activity. There are many practices that aren't criminal that fall far below the standards we should expect from public servants, such as our corrupt property tax system. I want to raise the bar so we can have political leaders we can be proud of, not just political leaders who aren't in jail.
I firmly believe that as Attorney General, I would play an important role in fighting corruption of our political system here in Illinois. That's why I'm asking for your vote. Please also consider making a contribution to our campaign. It would be a step towards electing an Attorney General who is an independent advocate for the people of this state.
