Heike Mühlhaus, Renate von Brevern, Tall 'Markierungen' object, 1996 | Renate von Brevern und Heike Mühlhaus founded the group COCKTAIL in 1983. At first in Wiesbaden, the two artists subsequently relocated to Berlin in the mid 1980s. They both worked predominantly with ceramics and thus inscribed themselves into the tradition of the classical modern art, as the Avant-Garde Ceramics was predominantly a female domain. However, the works by Mühlhaus and von Brevern are anything but ordinary, uniting unusual forms and rough surfaces. The tall 'Markierungen‘ object from 1996 is characterised by an uneven surface, and its jagged edge resembles a broken eggshell. However, the regular oval shape subdues the 'wild' structure of the vase and transforms it into a harmonious piece of craftwork. |
