A taste for profits

Good Morning Voornaam,

You've hopefully noticed that Ghost Wrap is now a twice-weekly podcast of roughly 5 minutes per episode, bringing you fresh and up-to-date insights on the most important themes on the JSE. In the latest show, you can come play rock, paper, scissors with me. Curious? Find out which companies I covered in Ghost Wrap at this link, brought to you by Mazars.

For a longer podcast packed with investment insights, you should listen to my discussion with Siyabelela Nomoyi of Satrix about bond ETFs and how they can be used alongside equity ETFs, particularly in an environment of higher rates. You'll find this episode of Ghost Stories at this link>>>

The podcasts aren't over yet. In Episode 136 of Magic Markets, you can enjoy a 20-minute discussion on retail stocks and the different business models across defensive and cyclical players in the market. We touched on US and local companies in this podcast>>>

Finally, aimed squarely at company owners and entrepreneurs, the latest bizval podcast featured Mike Finger of Exit Oasis in the US, a specialist in helping business owners sell their companies. If you want to understand how to build a business that can be sold, this podcast is for you>>>

Spur gives you wings

Move aside Red Bull; it's all about Spur today. The numbers for the 2023 financial year are just fantastic, with Spur clearly resonating with customers who are looking for value for money and an entertaining place to have a drink while the kids demolish an ice cream and play with someone else's toys. The HEPS number has blown away anything we've seen in recent years.

The same definitely can't be said for the mining industry right now. Impala Platinum has released a trading statement that I think is nowhere near as severe as the reality will be when a revised trading statement comes out. Th is comes off the back of other recent mining announcements, with Pan African Resources also giving us some additional data points with a production update.

It's not all bad in mining, of course. It all depends on what commodity is coming out of the ground. At Gemfields, the company is doubling down on rubies in Mozambique.

In addition to these stories and the assortment of Little Bites, there's also news of a B-BBEE deal at PPC South Africa. Get all the details you need (along with some fun charts today - let me know what you think!) in Ghost Bites this morning>>>

Frida y's progress by the rand has been undone

US inflation remains in focus, with emerging markets currencies losing ground on Monday. The rand is back to where it was before the release of non-farm payrolls, with the market's attention now shifting to the upcoming US CPI announcement on Thursday. Yields on US Treasuries continue to rise, with the 10-year up to 4.08% and the 30-year at 4.25%.

With that, I wish you a great Tuesday!

Ghost Bites (Gemfields | Impala Platinum | Pan African | PPC | Spur)

Spur released blowout results. Gemfields is doubling down on Mozambique. Tough times in mining at both Impala Platinum and Pan African. PPC is doing a 10% B-BBEE deal in SA.

With the recent news of Twitter being rebranded to X, as well as vastly improved results at Meta, social media has been highly topical again. But what is in a name, really?

Ghost Global: What's in a name?

Get ready to play rock, paper, scissors in this edition of Ghost Wrap. I covered mining and paper stocks, with some sharp results from Spur and Standard Bank as well. Ghost Wrap is brought to you by Mazars.

Working through local and global retailers as well as their business models, we covered a lot of ground in just 20 minutes. Expand your knowledge with Magic Markets.

Equity ETFs dominate the narrative among investors, particularly retail investors. Fixed income or bond ETFs are often ignored, which is a pity now that yields have picked up. With Siyabulela Nomoyi of Satrix, we put the spotlight on bond ETFs.
