A Prairie Home Companion
OUR CHRISTMAS SHOW
December 15, 2022

 Meet Us in St Louis!
for A Prairie Home Companion

During the 43-year run of A Prairie Home Companion, many of the December radio shows became fan favorites. The holiday season always seems to put most people in a festive mood, so why not get together and celebrate in song. Just imagine being one of a chorus of voices on “Silent Night,” finding the answer to a couple of life’s persistent questions, checking in on Dusty and Lefty, getting some advice from Mom, and hearing a few holiday tunes. That’s our aim: a fun-packed show. And we want you to join us in St. Louis!

The Fabulous Fox Theatre hosted many live A Prairie Home Companion broadcasts. For this show, Garrison Keillor will be joined by the Royal Academy of Radio Actors — featuring Sue Scott, Tim Russell, and Fred Newman — plus the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band led by Richard Dworsky performing with Pat Donohue, Dean Magraw, Diane Tremaine, and Jeff Carney. Plus special guest artists, including soprano Maria Jette and vocalist Heather Masse, among others.

She has appeared with orchestras nationwide, including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, New York Chamber Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra. ABOUT HEATHER MASSE:
Known to many as a member of the acclaimed Juno Award-winning Canadian band The Wailin’ Jennys, Heather Masse has taken the stage at hundreds of venues across Europe, Canada, and the U.S. She appeared regularly on A Prairie Home Companion, and the versatile vocalist has performed with the bluegrass band The Wayfaring Strangers on NPR’s World Cafe and at Boston’s Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops Orchestra. ABOUT RICHARD DWORSKY AND THE GUY’S ALL-STAR SHOE BAND:
The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band is led by longtime Prairie Home Companion music director Richard Dworsky. Keyboard player, composer, and improviser in any style, he also wrote the show’s script themes and underscores. Chet Atkins called Pat Donohue (guitar) one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today. And Pat writes songs too — recorded by Suzy Bogguss, Kenny Rogers, and others. His recordings include Blue Yonder and Vicksburg Blues (a collaboration with Butch Thompson). Guitarist Dean Magraw studied at the University of Minnesota and the Berklee School of Music in Boston. His first recording, 1994’s Broken Silence, won the NAIRD award for Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year. Dean has since turned out an array of dazzling albums. Cellist Diane Tremaine and bassist Jeff Carney round out the band.

ABOUT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF RADIO ACTORS:
A well-known Twin Cities radio personality and voice actor, Tim Russell is a man of myriad voices. He appeared in the Robert Altman film A Prairie Home Companion and the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man. For decades, Prairie Home fans heard Sue Scott play everything from well-intentioned moms and ditzy teenagers to Guy Noir stunners and leathery crones who’ve smoked one pack of Camel straights too many. She is the creator of the popular podcast Island of Discarded Women. Sound effects man Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, and sound designer for film and TV. Turns out, no one is more surprised than Fred that he’s made a career out of doing what he used to do behind the teacher’s back — crossing his eyes, making sounds, and doing voices. He readily admits that, growing up, he was unceremoniously removed from several classrooms, “once by my bottom lip.”

Boom Town: A Lake Wobegon Novel

Garrison Keillor takes you back to Lake Wobegon, America's most beloved fictional hometown.

Lake Wobegon is having a boom year thanks to millennial entrepreneurship--AuntMildred's.com Gourmet Meatloaf, for example, or Universal Fire, makers of artisanal firewood seasoned with sea salt. Meanwhile, the author flies in to give eulogies at the funerals of five classmates, including a couple whom he disliked, and he finds a wave of narcissism crashing on the rocks of Lutheran stoicism. He is restored by the humor and grace of his old girlfriend Arlene and a visit from his wife, Giselle, who arrives from New York for a big love scene in an old lake cabin.

Today, we are giving you the opportunity to purchase AUTOGRAPHED copies of Boom Town.  It’s sure to be a fun-packed read!
