Where NOLA Eats

Greetings, New Orleans food lovers! There's new life at the St. Roch Market food hall, where Ian McNulty tried the dishes and met the vendors. That might be because, after a summer on the brink, the hall has a new operator, who's also a longtime vendor. Two New Orleans restaurants made a list of just 50 that The New York Times is "most excited about." French wines will shine at this Galatoire's tasting dinner. NOCHI's fast-track culinary training programs seek support with an auction powered by celebrity chefs. Finally, Judy Walker shares recipes for fresh and filling salads.

1. Hall together now

From crepes to Creole gumbo, the St. Roch Market has menus to appeal to a variety of visitors. Ian McNulty sampled the food and met the vendors.

2. Under new management

After seeing business tumble and vendors come and go, St. Roch Market was poised to close over the summer. But now Kevin Pedeaux, of the market's CR Coffee Shop, has taken over operations from Politan Row.

3. Wait! There's more.

As usual, the New Orleans food scene punches above its weight, with not one but two restaurants on The New York Times' list of the country's 50 most exciting places to dine. Check out this five-course tasting dinner at Galatoire's, featuring French wines. And Thursday's NOCHI fundraiser is auctioning off some incredible experiences with chefs.

4. Salad days.

Summer's winding down, but fresh salads still hit the spot. Judy Walker has recipes for salads packed with tasty ingredients that won't weigh you down.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info at Where NOLA Eats.

St. Roch Market has a new operator, pledging change to save New Orleans' last food hall

Kevin Pedeaux was serving coffee in St. Roch Market the day it opened as a food hall back in 2015. In the time since he’s seen the St. Claude Avenue landmark thrive in its modern incarnation, and he’s seen the ways it fell short. Read more

What to cook

These fresh summer salads put healthy foods and seasonal flavors on your plate

A recent search for new main-dish salads led me in some fun directions. My new favorite dish is a shrimp, avocado and mango salad, accented with cilantro and green onion, bathed in a light lime dressing. It makes a fine supper or lunch, and I suspect cooked chicken might be almost as good in this salad. The recipe came from sunset.com. Try it on butter lettuce leaves. Read more
