Cleveland’s healthcare landscape is changing. University Hospitals ended inpatient care, surgeries and emergency services at UH Bedford and UH Richmond hospitals in August. Now St. Vincent, near downtown, is halting its inpatient care after more than 150 years. Hospitals are dealing with a lack of workers, a demand for outpatient care and the growth of telehealth. St. Vincent: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center will stop offering inpatient care on Nov. 15, reports Julie Washington. The hospital will transition to ambulatory healthcare services but keep outpatient mental health services, addiction medicine services through Rosary Hall, urgent care, primary care, internal medicine and specialty clinics. Title IX resolution: A proposed resolution likely to be discussed at next week’s Ohio State Board of Education meeting opposes a federal proposal to enhance Title IX protections for gay and transgender kids. Laura Hancock reports the board will consider a resolution stating that biological sex is not fluid. Today in Ohio: Sen. Sherrod Brown said Tuesday he plans to run for reelection in 2024, when his third term ends. Abortion ruling: A Hamilton County judge ordered that for the next 14 days, the Ohio Department of Health and state and local prosecutors cannot pursue doctors and clinics that perform abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, reports Laura Hancock. The temporary restraining order prevents the state, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and local prosecutors from enforcing House Bill 23, legislation passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Mike DeWine that prohibits abortion when a fetal heart tone is detected, typically at around six weeks and before many women know they are pregnant. Report cards: The Ohio Department of Education is expected to release the 2022 Ohio School Report Cards today using a new stars-based rating system instead of assigning A through F grades. Low-performing school districts will not be sanctioned or punished as a result of the results on the report cards for the second year in a row, reports Laura Hancock. Fentanyl: Permanently classifying fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs will be a top priority for U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio if Republicans take control of the U.S. House of Representatives next year, reports Sabrina Eaton. Jordan on Wednesday sent Drug Enforcement Administration administrator Anne Milgram a letter to seek information on how the drugs’ temporary classification as Schedule I drugs that have no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse has assisted the fight against the opioid crisis. |

Federal renaming: Two Ohio reservoirs, two streams, an island, and a bay were renamed this month as part of the Biden Administration's decision to remove use of what is viewed as a slur against indigenous women from the name of nearly 650 federal places. Zachary Smith reports the changes are in response to an order from the Department of the Interior in November “declaring ‘squaw’ a derogatory term and implementing procedures to remove the term from federal usage.” |

Exercise: A new study suggests exercise may prolong your life, even if it doesn’t lead to weight loss, reports Julie Washington. Regular physical activity was linked with lower rates of death from cardiovascular disease and other causes, a recently published study of Taiwanese adults suggests. Weight loss was not strongly associated with lower rates of death. Health violations: What suburban Cuyahoga County restaurants and retailers were cited for the most food-inspection violations during the 2021-22 inspection year? Under the influence: A divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that Ohioans can’t be found guilty of driving with a license suspended for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol so long as they don’t move the vehicle. Jeremy Pelzer reports the 4-3 ruling involves a case in which a Hamilton County woman previously convicted of an OVI was thrown out of a friend’s house and found hours later by police sleeping in the driver’s seat of a parked car with the engine running. Orthodox Jewish lawsuit: A University Heights man accused the city and mayor in a federal lawsuit of retaliating against him over prayer groups he planned to hold at his home to adhere to his Orthodox Jewish faith. Adam Ferrise reports Daniel Grand says the city sent police officers to patrol near his home and hired private investigators who sat in dark-colored, unmarked SUVs to conduct surveillance of him during a Jewish holiday. Opioid trial: A federal judge allowed three pharmacy chains to pay a bond instead of Trumbull and Lake counties while the businesses appeal a $650 million judgment rendered against them for their roles in the opioid crises in the two Ohio counties. Adam Ferrise reports the companies will pay three years' worth of the settlement, plus interest, totaling more than $141 million. |
