Collector & Investor Psychology
SPECIAL Announcement! Today is the One Month Mark to our most anticipated Annual April Fool's Make an Offer Day (MOD). I can't believe its been a year already! And many of you have been with me since the first MOD in 2010 and I'm most grateful. This will be our 14th MOD .
Ok, Which would you take? a Beachside Mansion in West Palm Beach or a box of Unopened Hockey Cards from 1979? . Imagine if you had a crystal ball 40 years ago and knew just what the demand for certain memorabilia and collectibles would be in 2024. Of course you’d be a multi millionaire. But I suspect there is more to understanding the desires of the Collectibles market. At least with the stock market you can follow a historical trend, albeit a hiccup can and does happen without warning. And stocks can go from $1000 a share to $1 a share overnight. You’ve no doubt seen many such scenarios. . Collectibles also have a historical trend. For example, for the past 20 years movie memorabilia collectors have watched classic horror posters skyrocket. And sport memorabilia collectors know what has happened to Top Tier Rookie cards like Mickey Mantle. The one major difference between the stock market and collectibles is, collectibles will Never plunge from $1000 to $1 overnight because the value is not based on typical market condition, but is based on emotion, nostalgia and a collecting euphoria that the stock market doesn’t have. The stock market is driven by the economy. . Compare that to the collectibles market which didn’t take a hit during the last three recessions I’ve been collecting and selling. As a matter of fact, 2008 was a Gangbuster year for me! I’ve read that the Art market was mostly unfazed by the 2008 crash. . If the economy crashes, that Mickey Mantle Rookie card will be immune to the pain the commerce market will have to endure. So maybe that explains a little bit of the psychology behind someone this past Sunday afternoon paying $3.7 MILLION for a case of Hockey cards that in 1979-80 cost about $25. .
