Retrofitting Vancouver's Existing Buildings: A Path to Sustainable Urban Living

150 24th Street, located in the heart of Dundarave, West Vancouver, is home to the Seastrand, a 16-storey residential building that has been a staple of the community since its construction in 1963. This building features 112 luxury condominiums with stunning ocean and city views, offering residents a blend of comfort and convenience. Currently, Architek is undertaking a significant retrofitting project to enhance the Seastrand's safety and aesthetics. The focus of this renovation is upgrading the balconies to enhance safety and aesthetic while keeping the immaculate views of the Burrard Inlet. Architek's innovative approach involves using rope access techniques to install new vertical steel cable webnet railings, allowing for a seamless upgrade without the need for scaffolding or resident displacement. This method modernizes the building's safety and preserves its architectural character while minimizing disruption to the residents' daily lives.

Do Stainless Steel Webnet Railings Change the Status Quo of Heat Island Effect?

(Spoiler alert: they do)

Stainless steel webnet railings represent a sophisticated approach to mitigating urban heat island effect. Their inherent durability and robustness ensure that they maintain their functional properties over extended periods, in contrast to other materials that may deteriorate with time. The versatility of webnet allows for its integration across a diverse array of urban structures, thereby augmenting the overall surface area capable of reducing heat absorption. Additionally, the transparent nature of the webnet facilitates the preservation of views and natural light penetration while simultaneously contributing to thermal regulation. Its customizable design enables tailored solutions that effectively address specific challenges associated with urban heat islands in various contexts. Furthermore, as a passive cooling mechanism, stainless steel webnet railings offer an environmentally sustainable solution to urban heating without necessitating additional energy input. While they may not serve as a panacea, these railings play a pivotal role in comprehensive strategies aimed at alleviating the heat island effect in metropolitan areas. It all starts here.

Understanding the Heat Island Effect

Urban heat islands effect occurs when cities experience higher temperatures than their rural surroundings, primarily due to human activities and the concentration of heat-absorbing materials like tempered glass, asphalt and concrete. This effect exacerbates energy consumption, elevates emissions, and impacts public health.

Webnet, Noteworthy Aspect of the Building Envelope

Stainless steel webnet railings effectively mitigate heat island effect by reflecting solar radiation and reducing heat absorption, outperforming materials like tempered glass. Their durability means minimal maintenance and lasting performance, while their sleek design enhances aesthetics. With high recyclability, this supports sustainable building practices, making them an ideal choice for modern urban architecture.
