SpaceX's Starship aces third test flight | The megarocket managed not to blow up like it did in its first two test flights and even reached orbit | SpaceX’s Starship rocket blasted off the launchpad for the third time on Thursday in what was its most successful flight yet. The world’s most powerful rocket — comprising the first-stage Super Heavy and upper-stage Starship spacecraft — roared away from the launchpad at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, at 8:25 a.m. local time. Several minutes after launch, the 120-meter-tall vehicle separated as planned, sending the Super Heavy toward the Gulf of Mexico and the Starship toward the Indian Ocean. “Super Heavy is performing beautifully today,” the live stream commentator said as the booster began its descent. It’s not yet clear if SpaceX achieved all of its flight objectives, but the rocket clearly performed brilliantly today ... | |

The TikTok bill passed, so will it be banned in the U.S.?
| While this is clearly the most serious threat yet to the popular app, the issue could still play out in a number of ways
| The House of Representatives voted through the TikTok bill on Wednesday, which could ultimately lead to the popular app being slapped with a ban in the U.S. Some lawmakers claim the app is a national security threat, fearing that the data that it holds on U.S. citizens could land up in the hands of the Chinese state, though TikTok disagrees. A ban is still far from certain, though. For example, the bill now heads to the Senate, and some think a vote there could be close. If the Senate passes it, TikTok will likely take the matter to court to ensure the app remains available in the U.S. TikTok can also avoid a ban by cutting ties with its Chinese owner, ByteDance, within six months of the bill becoming law. USA Today examines the matter in more detail ... | |

I tried Belkin’s ridiculous new iPhone accessory — and I love it
| 'The Belkin Auto-Tracking Stand Pro is one of the most ridiculous iPhone accessories of 2024. But it's also fantastic, and I tested it out'
| One of the most interesting iPhone accessories to debut this year wouldn't have been possible without Apple sneaking a new feature into iOS 17 last fall. While there's no shortage of iPhone stands and mounts on the market, Belkin's Stand Pro is something entirely different from the rest. That's thanks to Apple's DockKit. It's a framework for accessory makers to create motorized stands that can follow you around the room. While the concept itself isn't new, DockKit means that such stands can be significantly more affordable as they don't need to pack in complex sensors. At only $180, Belkin's Auto-Tracking Stand Pro is a remarkably inexpensive device, considering what it's capable of ... | |

The Golden Age of TV isn’t just over — it’s imploding
| 'Streaming TV was supposed to be our liberation from cable's hidden fees and frustrating contracts. But the cord-cutting revolution is over and we all lost' | This was originally going to be a rant about how streaming TV is now worse than cable, but as I crawled deeper into the rabbit hole, I realized that not only is streaming TV starting to look just like cable did in the 1990s, but the so-called Golden Age of Television that we've been enjoying is a bubble that's about to burst. But maybe that's not entirely bad. Stick with me. If you grew up watching TV in the pre-streaming era, you've probably gotten increasingly frustrated over the past few years as everything that was cool about streaming TV has slowly eroded. It's to the point now that we either pay more for streaming services than we did for cable or deal with so many ads that streaming feels more like cable than ever ... | |
