State legislature tackles property insurance crisis

Insurance crisis: Though lawmakers couldn't agree on how the state should settle insurance disputes, they did advance a plan to grant discounts to homeowners who install durable roofs, James Finn reports. Those and other measures are aimed at curbing Louisiana's skyrocketing property insurance costs.


Pay spat: A bill that would reduce the allotment Supreme Court justices get for travel and meals was deferred this week after justices forcefully debated the reduction before a House committee, Tyler Bridges reports. The chief justice favors the cut; his colleagues do not.


Lawyer questioned: U.S. senators grilled Baton Rouge lawyer Darrel Papillion on his prosecution of the Rev. Tony Spell, who in 2020 defied COVID restrictions by holding large church services, Mark Ballard reports. Papillion is President Joe Biden's nominee for the Eastern District Court bench; the Senate can choose to confirm or reject him.
