In this interview, Shai Reshef, the school's founder and president, discusses the model, which relies on volunteer faculty and administrators and charges $120 per course for the final assessment, which is subsidized for those who can't afford it.

Versatility is rare among leaders, but can be learned

Versatile leaders are those who can sense when different styles of management are called for -- such as taking charge or allowing others to lead the way -- depending on the specific challenges they're facing, write Robert B. Kaiser, president of Kaiser Leadership Solutions, Ryne A. Sherman and Robert Hogan, chief science officer and president of Hogan Assessment Systems, respectively. Such leaders are rare, they write, but the meta-skill can be developed through understanding how you behave in certain circumstances and getting comfortable with doing "what does not come naturally."

Leaders of remote teams can boost engagement and motivation by giving feedback that is direct, specific and performance-based and by using "positive phrasing" to show how the work an employee does benefits both them and the company, writes William Arruda, the co-founder of CareerBlast.TV. "By setting aside time for effective communication, using the right tools, having a clear agenda, and taking note of key points, leaders can ensure that their remote teams are getting the full picture, even on the smallest of screens," Arruda writes.

Conducting "stay" interviews can help employers better meet staff members' needs and improve retention by giving people a chance to express concerns and provide insights about their work experiences. Dick Finnegan of C-Suite Analytics recommends conducting the interviews in person and one-on-one, and he says the conversation should center on particular workplace issues, employee input and ideas for improvement, not an individual's job performance.
