Good morning. If you've had trouble clicking on links from our morning newsletter this week, it's not you, it's our email service provider. They're working on it, but for today, we're experimenting with a different format we hope will work a bit better. Thanks for your patience

New this morning:

  • At a conservative conference, far-right firebrand Steve Bannon made a gesture that looked like a Nazi salute while encouraging the crowd to “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Elon Musk performed a similar salute last month at an inauguration rally for President Donald Trump: Take a deep dive into Musk’s Jewish problem. (Separately, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker warned in a speech that Hitler’s dictatorship “started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.”)

  • The body of hostage Shiri Bibas was not returned to Israel on Thursday, the IDF said; instead, the remains of an unidentified person were provided in the swap as part of the ceasefire agreement. Confirmation of the deaths of Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, has sparked a wave of fury and grief; It’s unclear how this switch will affect Saturday’s planned hostages-for-prisoners exchange.

  • In our advice column, Bintel Brief, we contemplate: What to do when you’re misgendered on the phone — in part because almost no non-Jews are familiar with your name?
And now news, features, and opinion to start the day...

2025 Annual Naomi Prawer Kadar Memorial Lecture
Esteemed scholar Hannah Pollin-Galay explores how the Yiddish language evolved in Nazi ghettos and camps, gaining roughly 3,000 new words. Examining the works of K. Tzetnik and Chava Rosenfarb, this talk considers how these writers transformed "Khurbn Yiddish" into powerful expressions of horror, resilience, and artistic memory.
