Scalise has cancer: U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R- Metairie, said this morning he has been diagnosed with cancer. Scalise, the House majority leader, said he has begun treatment for multiple myeloma and plans to keep working. Our Washington correspondent Mark Ballard has the latest.
Saints cuts: It’ll be a tough day for some Saints players today. The team has to cut its roster, which means some hopefuls will be sent home. As of this morning, the Saints were 36 players over the league maximum of 53. Our Saints coverage team is keeping a live roster tracker here. (That Saints also traded away one well-known player Tuesday...)
Hurricane fuel: Residents along the Gulf coast of Florida continue to prepare for what is likely to be a very intense hurricane this week. They won’t get any help from the “ridiculously warm” Gulf of Mexico waters, which scientists fear will help any storms intensify rapidly. And of course, every year on this day we remember the somber anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (and Ida).
River monster: Hunters in Mississippi recently “harvested” a monster. Our friends at the Sun Herald in Biloxi have the story – and pix – of an absolutely massive alligator pulled from the Yazoo River. That river, by the way, just made our “don’t swim in” list.
