• The Kenduskeag Haunted House isn’t the biggest Halloween event in the state. But few can match the enthusiasm with which residents of the Penobscot County town attempt to scare the living daylights out of haunted house attendees.

• Mateo Carmelo-Bartolo, 31, who was arrested at the Goodwill store on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor, still could face removal proceedings in immigration court, according to his attorney. But prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s office for Maine have dropped the felony charge of re-entry after removal charge Carmelo-Bartolo was facing.

Like other Maine island towns, Stonington has too little housing for workers who need it

• Mike McLain cares about Stonington. As a Public Works Department worker, he helps maintain the town, and likes the people he’s met here.But the Bangor resident doesn’t see himself escaping his 1 ½-hour commute anytime soon.
  
  A nonprofit in town, however, has set its sights on building 10 apartments for workers over the next year. It's a start toward efforts to help a year-round population that has been declining.

• A legislative committee is set to meet Tuesday to begin the arduous discussion of how to fix the county jail funding challenge that has persisted for years. As lawmakers and others home in on the challenge, most are saying the key is to reduce, as in shrinking inmate populations, lowering recidivism and shortening sentences.
