Dear John,
You cannot aggravate someone into doing business with you.
Yesterday I was in a retail store and the clerk was eavesdropping on a conversation I was having with a friend. It was about politics. The clerk disagreed with me and he told me my point of view was ignorant. I looked at him and said:
"First of all: I wasn't engaging you in conversation so I'm not asking for your thoughts on this matter. Second: When you want someone to agree with you, it's better not to insult them (unless insulting them was your end goal). Finally: You work on commission, correct?"
The salesperson nodded, I handed him the $750 jacket I was trying on, and I walked out of the store.
The takeaway:
Stop pissing people off.
Every day I see people pick fights with others on social media, in a meeting, and even while they are on a sales call. While this may feel good in the moment, it absolutely kills any chance you have of doing business with the person on the receiving end of your lecture.
If you want to be successful, you need to help as many people as possible. Nobody on planet Earth agrees with you on every subject. Clients are in your life for one reason and one reason only: To help in return for financial compensation. Set your ego aside and keep your mouth shut when you disagree with something unrelated to your work.
Argue with friends and family. That's what holiday gatherings are for.
Don't go out of your way to point out areas of disagreement between you and your client.
Nice guys make more money.
Have a great week.
