The injury bug has transferred from the Utes to the Cougars this week. BYU's offense will look a little different today. In case you missed it, Deseret New's Jay Drew reported Thursday that Jake Retzlaff will start under center for the Cougars today instead of a “dinged up” Kedon Slovis.
In other Cougar news, BYU will play Texas in the Big 12 women’s soccer championship tonight at 6 p.m. MDT on ESPN+. It conflicts with the timing of the BYU football game, but it's an incredible feat for BYU soccer to reach the championship in their first year in the conference. So consider tuning in for at least part of the game!
94% of Utahns say school attendance is important but nearly 25% of kids are chronically absent
Utah schools across the state are dealing with chronic absenteeism despite a majority of Utahns saying school attendance is important.
A new poll from the Deseret News and the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics found that 57% of Utahns weren't concerned about chronic absenteeism, which is when a student misses 15 days of school.
But 94% of poll respondents say regular school attendance is important. Utah attendance data seems to support the first belief.
The recently released Utah State Board of Education public school report card shows that only 76.7% of secondary and 75.2% of K-8 students attended school consistently during the 2022-23 school year, which is only a slight increase from the previous year.

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, meaning Utahns will have to turn their clocks back at 2 a.m.
The Deseret News Editorial Board expressed its support in making daylight saving time permanent in a new editorial.
"Critics will argue this is an issue that captures public interest only for about a week twice each year," the editorial board writes. "Even this seemingly welcome change will result in sleep loss, which, even in the fall, can lead to inattentive driving. It carries a host of other consequences, as well."
