Good morning and happy Tuesday. Here's your update.
A calm, cooler day. Twin Cities highs in the upper 70s with morning sun turning to clouds with light winds. Evening lows in the upper 50s. Statewide, partly cloudy with highs in the 70s and nighttime lows from the upper 40s to upper 50s. More on Updraft | Forecast
Stopping the spread of COVID-19 is “largely going to be determined by the decisions each of us as Minnesotans make." That's from Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm, who said the state has received some 370 complaints in recent weeks tied to restaurants and bars over possible violations of the mask mandates and social distancing guidelines.
Intensive care cases have ticked up again. As of yesterday, ICU cases were at their highest level in five weeks.
Here are the latest coronavirus statistics:
- 56,560 cases confirmed (622 new) via 1,070,925 tests
- 1,616 deaths (2 new)
- 5,298 cases requiring hospitalization
- 302 people remain hospitalized; 153 in intensive care
- 49,565 patients no longer requiring isolation
The Sturgis motorcycle rally will "have one hell of an imprint on this country." And no, it won't be a positive influence. Michael Osterholm, head of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told MPR News that the South Dakota event could prove to be a major event in the COVID-19 outbreak given its length, crowd size and the fact that it gathers people from across the country into one small town. More than 250,000 people are expected to attend.
In non-coronavirus news, more disturbing video has surfaced showing the moments before George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police. British publication Daily Mail published leaked bodycam videos . The paper writes: "The tapes show in minute detail how a very distressed Floyd begs 'Mr. Officer, please don't shoot me. Please man,' before the struggle that ended with his death on May 25. It also shows how belligerent cops cursed at and manhandled the sobbing suspect, ignoring his pleas for compassion. ... Floyd is even heard predicting his own death. 'I'll probably just die this way,' he says." A warning: The Daily Mail video and article are incredibly disturbing and violent, so please consider that before choosing to click.
Before we go, I'd like to say this is the final update you'll get from me. Monday was my final day at MPR News. I'll continue my journalism as a freelancer in my new home of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thanks for reading these updates and know that they'll continue to hit your inbox every morning courtesy of my great former coworkers on the newsroom's digital team. Keep your mask on and be well.
