Opossum dropping: A new New Yearâs tradition?Every family has traditions to welcome in the new year. Some like to tune in to New Yearâs Rockinâ Eve and watch the ball drop in New York City, while others pop bottles and drink champagne till the crack of dawn. But residents in some parts of North Carolina have other ideas. Due to an obscure state law that says people can do anything they want to a opossum for five days each year, some towns have made it a tradition to drop one of these critters in a glass box during the New Yearâs countdown! The opossums are lowered slowly, so the animal isnât in any danger, but animal rights groups want to end the practice across the state anyway. Before this can happen, the laws need to change â but some locals are resistant to the idea. One town has been doing it for more than 24 years, after all. Did you know opossums are the only marsupials native to North America? Click or tap here to see an adorable animal friendship between a dog and a opossum. â |
