| A summer of hope and climate care at the Southbank Centre It's easy to feel overwhelmed when considering the scale of the climate emergency we all face. But Planet Summer, a new season at the Southbank Centre, rejects defeatism in favour of a more hopeful perspective, with the aim of encouraging visitors of all ages to reconnect with the natural world and find new ways of protecting our planet.
Planet Summer is inspired by Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis, a group show at the Hayward Gallery that brings together works by 15 different artists. The season runs until 3 September and features talks from the likes of Greta Thunberg, Mikaela Loach, Dominique Palmer, Rebecca Solnit and many more. It's also platforming some incredible artistic responses to the climate crisis — from a boundary-pushing show about the future of humanity by theatre pioneers Ontroerend Goed, to a haunting composition about the polar ice caps.
Many events are free to attend, including Pedal Power parties with DJs BORN N BREAD, Guava Jamz and Heart n Soul, plus Africa in Fashion recycling/upcycling events and a fashion show co-curated by Creative Resilience International. There are loads of ways for families to get involved, too — why not take your little ones to let off some steam in a recycled playground, or cool off in Jeppe Hein’s always-popular Appearing Rooms fountain.
