A veto for Gov. Edwards; storm threat gone

with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editor

Good day to you. We trust you are enjoying this wonderful weather, after riding out the storms yesterday. Here are our top headlines today.

Veto override

Legislators have rejected Gov. John Bel Edwards' veto of new congressional maps, marking the first time in 31 years that lawmakers overrode a veto over the objections of the state's chief executive. It's unlikely that this is the final word, however. Legal challenges are already underway from people who say Black voting strength is unfairly diluted under the Legislature's plan.

Landry pays own company $420K for campaign work

Over the past 15 years, Louisiana's attorney general has shifted $420,000 in campaign money to a company he owns, and then that company pays the people who work on his campaign. Under the practice, Landry doesn't show how many people work on his campaign, or who they are. That's different from every other statewide official. Andrea Gallo shows how it's done.

Weather woes behind us, for now

What a difference a day makes. Thursday is turning out great compared to Wednesday, when high winds raked the region. We're working on a story out of Arcola, where a tornado may have touched down last night. Here's another look at what we went through in the Baton Rouge region.

We appreciate your checking in with us today. We'll have more headlines later.
